High cube adds vertical space
A 40-foot high-cube container has a taller internal height than a standard 40-foot dry container and is commonly listed with volume in the mid-70-CBM range, depending on equipment.
The extra cube only creates value when cargo dimensions and loading method can use the height. A palletized load capped by warehouse height may gain little from a taller container.
One extra carton layer can be significant
For loose uniform cartons, the additional internal height may allow another complete layer. Because that extra layer extends across the container floor, it can add many cases even when the height difference looks modest.
Run both equipment sizes with the actual packed carton dimensions rather than comparing nominal CBM alone.
Check door opening and payload
The tallest internal point is not the same as the door opening. A tall unitized load must pass through the door safely.
High cube does not remove payload, road-weight or load-restraint constraints. Confirm the assigned equipment specification before booking.
When the extra height buys exactly one layer
Keep 60 × 40 × 40 cm cartons upright. The 40 ft standard preset holds 20 along its length, five across and five layers high: 500 cartons. Its high-cube counterpart fits six layers: 600 cartons. The 30 cm increase in internal height crosses the next 40 cm-layer threshold because the standard box already had 39 cm left above five layers.
These calculator results use rounded planning interiors of 1203 × 235 × 239 and 1203 × 235 × 269 cm. With a separate warehouse rule limiting this load to five layers, both scenarios would remain at 500 cartons. The tool does not enforce that stacking rule; you must apply it separately.
| Case | Layers | Cartons | Occupied volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, geometry only | 5 | 500 | 48.0 m³ |
| High cube, geometry only | 6 | 600 | 57.6 m³ |
| High cube, five-layer restriction | 5 | 500 | 48.0 m³ |
