Convert dimensions before multiplying
When dimensions are measured in centimeters, divide each dimension by 100 before multiplying. A 55 × 42 × 38 cm carton becomes 0.55 × 0.42 × 0.38 meters. Multiplying those figures gives 0.08778 CBM for one carton.
For multiple identical cartons, multiply the single-carton CBM by quantity. Keep the unrounded result through the calculation so a large shipment does not accumulate avoidable rounding error.
A faster centimeter formula
You can also multiply length × width × height × quantity in centimeters and divide the result by 1,000,000. Both methods are mathematically equivalent because one cubic meter contains one million cubic centimeters.
Use the packed outside dimensions rather than the product dimensions. Corrugated board, foam, corner protection and bulging can materially increase the volume a carrier or forwarder sees.
What CBM does not tell you
CBM is a volume measure, not proof that cargo fits a pallet, truck or container. Physical loading also depends on orientation, door openings, unusable gaps, weight distribution and equipment limits.
Use CBM as the first planning number, then move to pallet or container layout when the shipment must fit a specific handling unit.
Audit rounding across 100 cartons
For 100 cartons at 55 × 42 × 38 cm, the unrounded total is 8.778 m³. Rounding each carton from 0.08778 to 0.09 m³ first gives 9.00 m³, overstating the shipment by 0.222 m³. A display rounded at the end is different from altering every row before summing.
Keep the source columns as length_cm, width_cm, height_cm and quantity. The row calculation is length_cm × width_cm × height_cm × quantity ÷ 1,000,000. If a forwarder applies a minimum or commercial rounding rule, put that in a separate quoted-volume field.
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| One carton | 0.08778 m³ |
| 100 cartons before rounding | 8.778 m³ |
| Premature 0.09 × 100 | 9.000 m³ |
| Difference | 0.222 m³ |
