Loose Load vs Palletized Container Shipping

Compare cube efficiency, handling speed and product protection when deciding how to load a container.

Loose loading can use more cube

Floor-loaded cartons do not consume pallet deck height or pallet footprint, so they can often place more saleable units inside the same container. That advantage is strongest when cartons are strong, uniform and suitable for manual or conveyor handling.

The tradeoff is more individual handling at origin and destination, which can increase labor time and exposure to damage.

Pallets improve handling control

Palletized cargo can move quickly by forklift, keeps cases unitized and may align better with warehouse receiving. The pallet itself consumes volume and can create unused space around the container walls.

Customer routing guides, labor availability and damage risk often matter more than theoretical maximum carton count.

Model the full operation

Compare freight cost per unit together with loading labor, unloading labor, detention risk, warehouse productivity, pallet cost and damage history.

A container-loading calculator can estimate uniform carton geometry, but the operational choice should reflect the complete supply chain.

Compare two explicit layouts instead of assuming a percentage

For a fictional 20 ft interior of 589 × 235 × 239 cm and 40 × 30 × 25 cm cartons, the best uniform loose-carton grid is 14 × 7 × 9 = 882. Assume instead one non-double-stacked tier of 120 × 80 cm pallets, each carrying 48 cartons at 164.4 cm overall height.

A simple uniform pallet floor layout fits floor(589/120) × floor(235/80) = 4 × 2 = 8 pallets; rotating all pallets gives 7 × 1 = 7. Eight pallets at 48 cartons hold 384 cartons. Mixed pallet patterns or another approved stacking height can change this result, so 384 is a demonstrated layout rather than a maximum.

The comparison gives 882 individual cartons versus eight unitized pallets to handle. It does not assign unloading minutes, damage rates or savings that have not been measured. Obtain destination receiving requirements and real labor quotations before choosing the load method.
