There is no single global standard
Different regions and industries use different pallet footprints. The 48 × 40 inch GMA footprint is common in North American grocery and general distribution, while the 1200 × 800 mm EUR 1 pallet is widely used in Europe.
UK supply chains also use 1200 × 1000 mm pallets in many contexts. Before optimizing carton count, confirm the footprint accepted by the customer, warehouse and carrier.
Footprint changes carton count
A carton pattern that works efficiently on one pallet can leave large unused strips on another. Test both carton orientations, and remember that simple row-and-column calculations do not capture every possible interlocked pattern.
Pallet deck height also reduces the vertical space available when a carrier or warehouse specifies a maximum overall loaded height.
Size is only one constraint
Pallet capacity also depends on pallet design, condition, load distribution, carton compression strength, forklift handling and rack limits. Do not use a geometric carton count as a weight or safety approval.
For international moves, consider destination pallet requirements and whether wooden packaging needs treatment or marking under applicable rules.
The same carton on three deck footprints
Keep the carton upright with a 40 × 30 cm footprint. Compare both uniform orientations, without overhang. The larger deck does not guarantee a proportionally larger count: whole cartons and leftover strips control the result.
These counts exclude height and weight. EPAL publishes a 1200 × 800 × 144 mm Euro pallet. The GMA and UK deck-height defaults in this calculator are editable planning assumptions; a footprint does not establish a universal pallet height or load rating.
| Deck footprint | Aligned layer | Rotated layer | Best uniform layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Euro 120 × 80 cm | 3 × 2 = 6 | 4 × 2 = 8 | 8 |
| GMA 121.92 × 101.6 cm | 3 × 3 = 9 | 4 × 2 = 8 | 9 |
| UK 120 × 100 cm | 3 × 3 = 9 | 4 × 2 = 8 | 9 |
