DHL-Style Volumetric Weight Example

Work through a metric express-shipping example using a 5000 divisor, then compare the result with scale weight.

DHL: verify units and the selected service

DHL’s public DCT help lists 5000 for centimeters/kilograms and 139 for inches/pounds, with chargeable weight based on the greater of actual and volumetric. This source establishes the divisor; the generic calculator does not add a service rounding increment.

Reproduce the example

50 × 40 × 30 cm ÷ 5000 gives 12 kg. With actual weight 7 kg, the unrounded larger weight is 12 kg. Load the metric example; changing the divisor to 6000 changes the assumption and gives 10 kg.

Scope and limits

The comparison is a planning calculation for rectangular parcels, not a rate quote. Additional handling, large-package minimum weights, oversize pricing, service eligibility and negotiated terms are not calculated. Measure the finished package and verify the exact service before booking.
