How to Measure a Box for Shipping Correctly

Measure external length, width, height and weight in a way that supports CBM, DIM-weight and girth calculations.

Measure the finished package

Close, tape and prepare the carton as it will be shipped before measuring. Use the outside dimensions at the widest points rather than an empty-box manufacturer's nominal size.

Bulging panels, corner protectors, edge boards, straps and handles can increase the measured dimensions. Small increases matter because dimensional-weight formulas multiply all three sides.

Identify length consistently

For many parcel rules, length is the longest side. The other two dimensions form the cross-section used for girth. For volume calculations, the labels length, width and height are interchangeable mathematically as long as all three dimensions are included.

Record units beside the measurements. A number without cm, mm or inches is an easy source of mistakes when supplier and carrier systems use different measurement standards.

Weigh after packing

Actual weight should include the product, carton, inserts, labels and any other material tendered to the carrier. A product catalog weight is not a substitute for packed gross weight.

For frequent SKUs, maintain a verified packed-product profile and recheck it when packaging changes. That turns one-off measurement into reliable operational data.

A finished-box measurement log

Consider a nominal 40 × 30 × 20 cm carton that measures 41 × 31 × 21 cm after packing. Its outside volume is 26,691 cm³ rather than 24,000 cm³, an 11.2125% increase. At a 5000 divisor the unrounded dimensional weight changes from 4.8 to 5.3382 kg.

Record the SKU, packed sample identifier, date, scale weight, units and three maximum outside measurements. If several samples differ, keep the range rather than silently replacing it with a product specification. The measurements above are a fictional illustration, not a measured Cargoivo packing trial.
