A three-size shipment you can reproduce
This shipment contains 24 cartons in three sizes. Keep each size on its own row, multiply its volume by its quantity, and sum the row totals. Cargoivo now supports those rows directly in the CBM calculator. All rows use the unit selected above the first row.
Size A is 60 × 40 × 30 cm, quantity 10. Size B is 50 × 35 × 25 cm, quantity 6. Size C is 40 × 30 × 20 cm, quantity 8. These are fictional planning measurements, not a carrier packing specification.
Calculate and sum the rows
The shipment total is 1.1745 m³. The count of 24 cartons is a useful cross-check against the packing list; it does not replace the separate dimensional rows.
| Size | Packed dimensions | Quantity | CBM each | Row CBM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 60 × 40 × 30 cm | 10 | 0.072000 | 0.7200 |
| B | 50 × 35 × 25 cm | 6 | 0.043750 | 0.2625 |
| C | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | 8 | 0.024000 | 0.1920 |
| Total | Three sizes | 24 | — | 1.1745 |
Why average dimensions give the wrong answer
Even a quantity-weighted average of each dimension does not preserve volume. For these cartons, the weighted dimensions are approximately 50.8333 × 35.4167 × 25.4167 cm. Multiplying those averages and then multiplying by 24 gives about 1.0982 m³, below the correct 1.1745 m³. Volume depends on products of dimensions, so average the individual carton volumes if you need an average—not the three dimensions separately.
Another avoidable error is rounding every carton to two decimal places first. That makes the per-carton figures 0.07, 0.04 and 0.02 m³ and produces only 1.10 m³. Keep the full calculation until the shipment total is ready to display.
Verify edits against a known difference
Load the worksheet and change size B quantity from 6 to 7. One B carton adds exactly 0.04375 m³, so the total becomes 1.21825 m³, displayed as 1.2183. Remove size C and the original A-plus-B total should be 0.9825 m³. These two checks catch a row that was omitted or counted twice.
The result describes the cartons themselves. Stacking them on a pallet can introduce a larger outside envelope; measuring that assembled load is a separate step. Use the pallet calculator to explore a simple layer, and confirm the final dimensions with the forwarder.
