Use exact base relationships
One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters. One foot equals 12 inches. One kilogram equals approximately 2.20462 pounds, while one pound equals approximately 0.453592 kilograms.
Store enough decimal precision during calculations and round only for the field or carrier rule that requires it.
Volume requires cubic conversion
Length conversion factors cannot be applied once to a cubic measurement. A cubic conversion includes the factor in length, width and height.
For this reason, it is often safer to convert each dimension to the target unit before calculating CBM or dimensional weight.
Label every operational number
Packing lists and spreadsheets should display units in headers and exported files. A value such as 40 can mean millimeters, centimeters, inches, kilograms or pounds depending on context.
Clear unit labels prevent errors when information moves between supplier, warehouse, forwarder and customer systems.
Choose the converter from the unit, not the number
An input labeled 12 ft is a length: it equals 3.6576 m. An input labeled 12 ft³ is a volume: it equals 0.339802159104 m³. Applying the linear factor to the volume gives 3.6576, a result with the wrong units and more than ten times the correct volume.
Keep separate spreadsheet columns for raw value, raw unit, converted value and converted unit. Reject a length unit in a volume field. Cargoivo’s shipping-unit converter handles length and weight; its cubic-meter converter handles already calculated volume.
